This is my least favorite part of the week.
Not because anything is actually that bad about it. I just have it in my head that I shouldn’t need medication. I should be able to be just fine without it.
But, I am coming to learn that it is ABSOLUTELY okay to use this gift of science to help better life.
There is a whole slew of medications a doctor can prescribe for mental health:
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs)
Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRI)
Antipsychotics (not as scary as it sounds)
Benzodiazepines
Anxiolytics
Mood Stabilizers (like Lithium)
Aaaaaand many others. I might have already lost you but here’s the kicker of my message: everyone is different and everyone’s needs are different. That is as obvious as it gets, but I have seen time and time again where people struggle with taking medications for mental health because of the stigma that still exists. Just like people who have other physical conditions that require treatment with medication, those who struggle with mental health may also require medication. “There should be no more shame in acknowledging [mental health] than in acknowledging a battle with high blood pressure or the sudden appearance of a malignant tumor.”
Please be kind. That includes yourself.
Thanks for your time :)
